Whats an “e-cig”?
An electronic cigarette or “e-cigarette” is a battery-powered device that provides inhaled doses of nicotine by heating a nicotine solution into a vapor. It is an alternative to smoked tobacco products, such as cigarettes, cigars, or pipes. In addition to nicotine delivery, this vapor also provides a flavor and physical sensation similar to that of inhaled tobacco smoke, while no tobacco, smoke, or combustion is actually involved in its operation. -wiki

How does this thing work?
The e-cig, or personal vaporizing unit, is not as complex as it seems.   A rechargeable  lithium ion battery, similar to a cell phone battery, provides the electric power.  This is known simply as the battery.  The atomizer, though it sounds real high tech, is just a simple heating element.  When the batteries power is directed to the atomizer, a small portion of the e-liquid is converted into a visible vapor by the heating element.  This vapor is not smoke, but it looks like smoke and it does provide a dose of nicotine, much like cigarette smoke.  It should not actually be called a cigarette, since it does not contain tobacco nor is it smoke.  However, if we only refer to them as personal vaporizing units, people don’t understand what the heck we are talking about.  So just to be clear, we’re talking about a device that should replace cigarettes, cigars, snus, pipes, snuff, and other forms of tobacco, while still providing nicotine and all the tactile sensations smokers have developed there habbit around.

Why do people use e-cigs?

Different people have different reasons.

As for myself, the number one issue was cost.  At a fraction of the price, a smoker will save thousands of dollars by switching over.  Do the math- 30 ml is equal to 30 packs of traditional cigarettes,  even cheap cigarettes at $5 a pack would cost over $150, whereas a 30 ml bottle of liquid is only $27.  It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that this is cheaper.  A pack a day smoker will save enough to pay for their e-cig kit within the first month, maybe even within the first week.  Over a year this adds up to thousands in savings.

Another reason one may choose an e-cig is accessibility.  Since MOST public smoking bans do not apply to the e-cig or vaping, users find it very convenient.  Smoking an e-cig while enjoying a beer is pretty great.  I remember when the first smoking bans came into play, the front door at many bars would have two or more people with one foot in the door and the other foot out of the door so they could enjoy a smoke and a beer at the same time.  Now you have to be at least twenty feet away from the door!  If you smoke cigarettes, you will not be welcome almost everywhere.  Let’s be honest though, it stinks, especially to those who don’t smoke.  E-smoking is a great solution to this, one  can indulge in their habit without subjecting others to acrid odors and deadly second hand smoke.  UPDATE: Please do not use your electronic cigarette in any offensive manner, currently we are capable of using these products in many more settings than traditional cigarettes, but it is wise to use common courtesy and follow all current regulations regarding e-cigs and the smoking bans each state deems applicable.

Finally and maybe the most selfless reason is environmental.  Have you ever wondered how much  garbage is created by cigarette butts?  What about the forest fires that ravage our landscape due to a carelessly discarded cigarette?  Not to mention greenhouse gasses emitted by the tens of billions (with a “b”) of cigarettes burned every day.  Again, not very hard to see that cigarettes don’t  just affect you in a bad way, but they affect everyone and everything in a bad way.   Just imagine a life without ashes, without cigarette butts, and without the foul odor you carry with you as a smoker.   E-cigs are 100% recyclable and save you money while you save the planet!
